Vintage Report 2008 25.03.2009
Like every year harvest was our most exciting event in 2008. It is always very fascinating to pick the grapes and to watch how the new vintage develops in the cellar.

The weather is changing… 24.10.2008
We completly finished harvesting the early ripening grape varieties. At the moment our harvest team is continuning the pre-selection in our Riesling vinyards. Thereby they are proceeding the already botrytis infected grapes out of the vinyard to protect the healthy grapes of being infected too early.
We try to keep the healthy grapes in the vinyards as long as possible to recieve as much physiological ripeness for the grapes as possible. Therefor we mainly need sunny days which alternate regularly with foggy and rainy days at the moment. Especially impressiv have the weather changings beginning of this week been. On Sunday we had a very warm and sunny day with a bright blue sky and on Monday the weather was so foggy that we had to wait till 11.30 a.m. to start our work in the vinyards. The next two days we had dully weather with rain, but today the sun started to shine again!

Picture 1 and 2: Stefanie and Agnes Hasselbach are checking the quality of the grapes in the Rothenberg vinyard on a very sunny and warm Sunday.

Picture 3 and 4: Fog in the “Roter Hang”. Early Monday morning we had so foggy weather that the visibility was only a few meters. At 10.30 a.m. the fog started to clear away, so that we could start working at 11.30 a.m., three hours late!

Harvest 2008 17.10.2008
In the meantime we are in the middle of harvest 2008. Although we guessed harvest to start earlier than normal this year, we did not expect that weather conditions would force us to start that suddenly.
Luckily we prepared our cellar and carriages for harvest in time and our polish harvest team arrived punctual. So we were able to kick off in the last week of september.
Yet we already harvested the early ripening grape varieties like Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Grigio and their must is already fermenting.
The challenging weather conditions of this vegetation period caused early Botrytis especially on the early ripening grape varieties. Therefor we selected those grapes at the sorting table by hand. Indeed this reduced our quantity but afford us to achieve our high quality standard.
To catch our high quality standard for the Riesling wines in 2008 we already started to do a pre-selection in our Riesling-vinyards. Thereby the botrytis infected grapes were cut out the vinyards. By the use of this laborious method we avoid the healthy grapes being infected by the botryis fungus at this early point of time and so we create perfect conditions for the Riesling grapes to reach physiological ripeness. Additionally the last days dry weather conditions helped us to stop the Botrytis fungus.
Till now we are very satisfied with how harvest is going on. The mood of our team is very harmonic and the hectic rush of the beginning has calmed down, so that everyone is able to do his work concentrated and with the needed calmness – best conditions for harvest time 2008!

We finally finished harvest 2007! 11.03.2008
Our harvest 2007 was finished on the 10th of Febuary 2008.
Because of the former days have been dry and sunny which means perfect conditions for the Riesling grapes we decided to harvest the grapes we left in the vinyards. We started at 8 o´clock on this cold, but sunny Sunday morning with the help of ten men and women and finished harvesting within four hours. Before pressing the grapes have been selected once again to make sure that only the best berries will be used for producing this high quality Riesling wine. At the end we recieved 180 Liter of grape-must with the peak degrees of 240°Oechsle and 285°Oechsle.

Merry Christmas 18.12.2007
Dear Customers and Friends of Gunderloch,

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The Hasselbach family and Team

Halftime 16.10.2007
Today we nearly harvested half of our Riesling grapes. The weather conditions are still perfect with sunshine during the days and cold temperatures at night. To get the best quality out of the vinyard we divided our team into two groups. One group harvests as usual while the other group slects the rotten and the sundryied grapes at the sorting table.

While harvesting is a lot of work we were very happy getting some help from our friends visiting us from the U.S.

Generally our harvesting team is very international. This year we have people from Poland, Portugal and Australia helping us to get the grapes out of the vinyards and into the cellar.

08.10.2007
Since a few days we have perfect weather conditions for harvesting the Riesling grapes. During the day we have sunshine but both during the day and during the night the temperatures are cool.
Today it is again a perfect day with a little fog during the early morning hours and a blue sky for the rest of the day.

It´s vintage time 04.10.2007
The Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc, Silvaner and Sauvignon Blanc are already harvested and some mustes have already fermented.
Our Riesling grapes get a special treatment.
To get the best qualities out of the vinyards and due to the last weeks weather conditions we make a "negativselection" in the vinyards. Therby we select the sunburned grapes already in the vinyards and selct them again on the sorting table. Those arrangements cause a lost of quantity but a rise of quality.
